We all blow dry our hair, but did you know that how you blow dry can determine whether it’s a good hair day or bad hair day?  Yikes!  I’m going to share some simple tips to help you achieve the hair style you want from home.

1. Brush through your hair, parting where you want the part to fall at your hair line. Use a small amount of serum that will protect from the blow dryer heat and help with shine.  Section off your hair into four sections, using hair clips to make it easier.  Start drying from the back of your head, as these are the strands that are generally very wavy and tend be the most stubborn to deal with.

2. Always, always, always point the blow dryer down! It smoothes the cuticle by allowing it to lay the way you would like it to. Translation?  Less frizz!  When straightening your hair, continuously brush down in the direction of the dryer air. It might be a bit like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time in the beginning but you will get used to it! The cuticle will be much smoother and easier to flat iron or curl when your hair is dry. Shaking your dryer around is not necessary, because it can cause more frizz as you are roughing up your cuticle.  And, it might actually cause tangles to form.  I know your arm might get sore holding the dryer up above your head for a long period but stay positive – your great hair day is just moments away!

3. Move to the top separated section and blow dry up to create some volume throughout the top of your hair. This section is blown up while the brush is moving up. A root lifter is always great to use and applied directly to the crown area where you have created your parting. One of my favorites is the Sexy Hair Concepts Root Pump Plus. I like it because not only does it create the volume it also has a nozzle that is easy to spray exactly where I want to lift.

4. Next, move to the front two sections of your hair. You will be blow drying down in the direction you want the hair to lay. If a cowlick causes you problems in the front of your hair, concentrate a bit more on that section or you may have to get it wet again to get that area to stay in the style that you desire.

5. Additional styling with a flat iron or curling iron should be follow up by separating into section again and applying a heat protectant like Paul Mitchell Heat Seal before using any direct heating tools.

Tips:

Use the cool shot button when your strands are almost dry for each section. Especially when using a round brush. The cool shot button will help to “freeze” the hair into your style.

Product is mandatory!

-Coarse or thick hair types should use a serum or blow out cream to help way down the frizzies before drying such as MORACCANOIL or Biolage Thermal Active Repair Cream.

-Fine or Limp Hair should be using a light weight protective serum or oil such as MORACCANOIL Light or Sexy Hair Concepts Blow Dry Volume Gel.

During the winter months we all need a pick me up and a great hair day will give us the shine we might not be getting from the sun! Enjoy the crisp breeze through your perfectly blown out hair and send me some questions through our Ask A Stylist section, I would love to hear from you!

Thank you. This is really helpful. I’ve heard to section off hair for lots of things but not blow drying…it makes a lot of sense. Using a shot of cool air at the end is a great idea, too. Sometimes I skip product, but once I hear “mandatory” I don’t think I’ll do that again. Very informative.
