Do you have a New Year’s resolution to become healthier in 2011?  Traditionally, you’d think of just diet and exercise, but it’s also a great time to talk about the health of your hair!

One of the simplest ways to get healthier hair is to find the right hair product.  We are seeing tons of product lines advertising hair product as “sulfate-free" these days.  So what does this mean and why would it benefit you?

Sulfates are the ingredients in shampoo that create lather and bubbles.  Most of us were trained to think “if it doesn’t bubble, it is not working,” but that’s really not the case.

Detergents (sulfates) strip your hair of the natural oils needed for moisture and also fade color much faster than the sulfate-free products. Sulfates also can cause frizz because the surface of your hair (the cuticle) is being roughed up and torn apart. If you have noticed your hair oily or even dry, it could be that you are using a shampoo that contains too many sulfates and those sulfates are stripping away your natural oils… making the body overcompensate for depletion of oils!

Sulfate-free products cleanse the scalp without stripping away the oils your hair needs to stay balanced.

So, if you have noticed your color fading fast, that you have scalp issues or if you simply want to be more ‘green,’ start using sulfate-free products. You will see a difference in the health of your hair and scalp. Here are a few sulfate-free product lines that I would recommend:

Nature’s Rescue by Redken

Coppola Keratin Complex

MOROCCANOIL

Biolage Delicate Care by Matrix
