The Golden Globes: It’s the award show where anything can happen and always one of my faves. So what were the stars wearing?  I don’t know!  I couldn’t take my eyes off those retro-styled locks!  Falling right in line with the trend from The People’s Choice Awards, ponytails and hair worn down were all over the red carpet.  There were quite a few that stood out from the crowd and this list was very difficult to narrow down.

Without wasting any more time here are my top five:

For the very first award show of the season the theme might have been “Hollywood Chic,” but the theme for hair at the 2012 People's Choice Awards was definitely relaxed and fresh!  There were lots of ponytails that graced the red carpet and even more common was hair just simply worn down. Whether straight, curly or wavy, hair left down in its natural state was the big winner for the evening.

Narrowing down this list to 5 was a very difficult task, but here they in are!

I’ve seen so much on the web about New Year’s resolutions and lists of ways to make self-improvements to start the New Year off right.  One thing I haven't noticed a lot of, however, is beauty resolutions.

Sometimes the best way to give yourself a pick-me-up is to shake up your beauty routine.  Sure you could always pick a different shade of lipstick or decide to tweeze your eyebrows differently but why not change your hair?

Often people become stagnate in their hair routine.  While there is no shame in this, what works for you is what works for you, there is never any harm in turning to your stylist to say “Do whatever you want!”

Now for those a little less brave, consider minor changes to your usual cut, color or style to make a big improvement in 2012. Here are ways to make those subtle but significant changes.

What is the first thing we do when picking up a new product? We lift the lid and sniff, right? Well, Redken's Nature's Rescue is sure to delight the senses!

Not only does it just smell good, it smells like summer. During these cold months, anything that can take me back to warm weather is welcomed! But it's not just the smell that leaves me thinking of palm trees and warm summer breezes.  It is the whole 4-product system: Refreshing Detox Shampoo, Cooling Deep Conditioner, Refining Sea Polish, and Radiant Sea Spray that takes me back to the beach.

The holiday season is fast approaching, and with all of the gifts you need to buy, haircuts might be the last thing on your brain.  But in order to keep your hair healthy, don’t skim on the trims!

As your web stylist, let me tell you that the most important step to keeping your hair healthy, shiny and beautiful is to have it cut on a monthly/bi-monthly basis (depending on your length).  For men this is typically not a difficult task, since usually within a month their desired style has grown out. Women on the other hand are able to let it go a bit longer, but this is only causing more damage to the ends of the hair.

Thinking about going darker with your haircolor with the change of the seasons? Here are some helpful hints on how to keep your color vibrant.

Formulating the perfect color can seem to be the most important thing to someone going darker, however not using the right products at home can cause that brilliant brunette or  sassy red hair to fade in just a few shampoos.  I mean, would you take your freshly waxed car home and wash it with harsh chemicals?

Color Protecting Shampoo

A color protecting shampoo is the base of all color-lasting vibrancy. Color protecting shampoos such as Matrix Color Care with Fade Guard Technology  or Redken Color Extend are great for the first steps in color perfection at home. Also, try to look for sulfate-free shampoo, such as Paul Mitchell Awapuhi and Wild Ginger or Argan-rich Amir. These products are free of harsh lathering detergents. So they gently cleanse the hair with out leaving and build up of residue on the hair shaft that can dull the hair or weigh it down.

Look around at your fellow baseball fans, and you might notice a trend… Beards, mustaches, soul patches, chin curtains, etc. There is an undeniable link between postseason baseball and facial hair.

One common factor among them is that they are rarely touched or groomed once a team enters the Postseason, so as to not disturb the baseball gods.  As an avid baseball fan myself, I am on a mission to comb through this superstition and discover the power of the facial hair.   (Spoiler alert: I am a HUGE Cards fan – Here's to 11 in '11!)

This hair-growing trend has been around for a while. Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers has one of the most unique types of facial hair baseball has seen!

Today marks our first year as LookAfter (and we celebrate 26 years in business!)  Let's take a look at the trends we've seen over the past year, and what's to come!

2011 marks the year for volume… I'm talking height, texture and curls. Break out your curling irons, and hot rollers ladies because this trend isn’t going away. If you feel as though you have been ahead of this craze, change it up by shifting your part. It might take some coaching by your hairdryer, and brush but it is possible. Your hard-work will be rewarded with a noticeably different look, and might become your new signature style! Check earlier blogs, Change Your Style Without Shears, or Love is in the Hair for more tips on this evolving trend.

We’ve seen an influx of bangs in 2011.  We’ve stepped away a bit from the side-swept or swoopy bangs of the previous decade, and have been inundated with a more classic bang look.  Whether the bangs are textured or kept sleek and smooth, this look has been seen on runways and celebrities alike. For ways to keep your fringe looking fresh in 2012, check out Jen B’s blog, Freshen Up That Fringe.

White flakes falling from above… No I’m not talking about the cold, wet ones that remind us of the holidays. I’m speaking of the menacing and embarrassing flakes that fall from our scalp.

Sometimes people brush these off as dandruff, but more times than not it is actually dry scalp.  Dry scalp is something that affects men, women and children at almost any age.  It is often exacerbated in the extreme of the seasons.  Sweltering heat or bitter cold could intensify your dry scalp.  As a result, it might require an adjustment in your normal routine.

Condition… Condition… Condition! (ahem, ahem… Men)

This is the first defense against dry scalp.  Think of your scalp the same as the rest of your skin.  It needs moisture, or it will become dry, ashy and eventually flake.

If you have not been conditioning your hair, any professional conditioner will be an improvement, however if you are currently conditioning in your daily routine, you may need something with medicinal properties… TEA TREE OIL!

Tea Tree is anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial oil, used homeopathically to heal or aid everything from bug bites and burns, to psoriasis and acne. Paul Mitchell Systems has an entire line infused with Tea Tree oil, for your hair and body.

As a stylist, I hear dozens of different “hair complaints” each day from clients: “My hair is so frizzy!,” “My hair is way too thick!,” “It gets so greasy!”, etc. Everyone has different issues. There is one complaint, however, that seems to escape every woman’s lips; “I CAN’T GET VOLUME!”.

Well ladies, I have good news. You CAN get volume, and you don’t have to be a hairstylist to do it! Here’s the secret – even the best teasing brush and the hottest blowdryer won’t always give your hair the boost you’re looking for without the right products. They make ALL the difference, I promise!
